The Surrey-based indie rock outfit, Little Spitfire, has been named as a featured performer at the nascent INDY Music Award’s press launch in London on 18 April. The invitation to perform was based on the band’s reputation for providing quality live performances and hit-making music.
The INDY Music Awards was created by collection of live music promoters and managers to recognise and celebrate the hard work of independent music venues and promoters (IVPs) and the artists they showcase. Over 60 of London’s top IVPs came together earlier in the year to nominate over 200 acts out of an estimated 40,000 who, in their opinion, were the very best artists that performed in their London venues in 2006.
Of the numerous acts nominated for various music awards at the gala ceremony, Little Spitfire was selected to share a stage at London’s Rock Garden with three other acts: Joe Driscoll, Alex Holland and The Lightyears. The live acts will be supporting the press launch for the new awards on 18 April 2007, which is itself the official launch for the INDY Music Awards.
In the past year, Little Spitfire has been taking North America by storm with interest growing in the UK. A track featured on the North American teen drama ‘Falcon Beach’, exposure on the Channel 4 website plus the current single ‘if i look i see you’ being featured on the high profile UK television advertisement for Challenge TV’s ‘Poker at 10’ as well as tracks being featured on RipCurl and O’Neill DVDs have all lead to a buzz building around the band. Their promotional video has already made all the right noises in North America, Australia and New Zealand.
“We were thrilled to receive nominations from The Playroom and Bullet Bar”, said Little Spitfire front person, Kirsten Blakely. “And our selection by the organizers to help launch these new awards is tremendous.”
Guitarist and backing vocalist Stu North said: “We faced some pretty tough competition when it came to being asked to perform at the press launch. We’re fired up for it.”
“It’s important for all the nominated artists and the INDY Music Awards themselves that we put on a great showcase at this event”, Jeremy Glover from the INDY Music Awards said. “This small sample of the 218 nominated artists will really highlight what amazing talent there is out there. It’s a great line up and I hope everyone who comes will be as impressed as I am, and are excited about seeing all these artists perform live!”

“I was absolutely delighted when I heard that Little Spitfire had been asked to perform at the press launch for the INDY Music Awards,” said Aardvark Record spokesperson, Alex di Savoia. “When we were told about the band’s nomination for the awards itself, there was such a buzz in the office,” he added. “It’s a cliché to be true, but Little Spitfire really deserves this and it just goes to show that a band really can get noticed and its hard work appreciated by true industry opinion formers and peers.”
While speaking about the importance of the awards themselves, di Savoia said; “The INDY Music Awards are an important addition to the industry. Its ethos and raison d'etre makes it extremely relevant in the changing face of the modern music industry and in the relationship between bands and their supporters. Aardvark is happy to support it in any way we can.”
Little Spitfire’s debut album ‘say hello’ will be released in the UK on Aardvark Records in April. It will be Aardvark’s first release to UK music retail outlets and suppliers using the quickly maturing CD on Demand technology

Note to Editors:
About the INDY Music Awards
The INDY Music Awards, the UK's first exciting and dynamic new awards scheme to fully recognise and reward the independent venues, promoters and artists that are the lifeblood of the grassroots music scene will take place at London's Clapham Grand on May 15th 2007.
The INDY Music Awards not only recognise this but are unique in highlighting and raising awareness of the significant relationship between venues, promoters and the great wealth of undiscovered talent that exists within this country. While there are countless unsigned schemes and initiatives in the UK, few of them actually empower, reward or make a difference to the key people that keep the independent sector healthy and vibrant. The INDY Music Awards will readdress this.
Categories for the awards include best independent venue and fan of the year with artist award categories spanning at least six different musical genres. 60 of London's top independent venues and promoters have nominated over 200 of the best bands (out of an estimated 30,000) that have performed in their venues over the past year, while thousands of votes have already been cast by fans via the dedicated website www.indyawards.co.uk.
Voting will close on April 2nd and the artists that have received the most votes will then be shortlisted. A panel made up of some of the UK's most influential industry figures will then select the final winners in each category, with a People's Choice Award for the artist that generates the most popular vote. The shortlist will be announced at a launch event at the Rock Garden, Covent Garden on Wednesday April 18th.
Hosted by Virgin Radio's Greg Burns, the awards ceremony on 15th May will feature performances from established artists as well as the cream of the UK's independent talent.
Venues can nominate four artists, however as promoters often work with several venues they can nominate four artists for each venue they promote.
Artists are eligible if they are unsigned or signed to an independent label or their own label. They are not eligible if they were signed to any of the major record labels or their subsidiaries in 2006. Artists do not have to be based in London but must have played at a London venue in 2006.
